Abstract A new method for the individual identification of Fire salamanders was applied to a population from central Italy. In this work, 233 specimens recaptured from one to five times, were identified by using a digital camera and database software. The method of photographic identification here proposed is applicable also on large dimension populations. The localization of each animal was inserted into a vectorial map for movement analysis; a study of home range was also performed. The results obtained by movement and home range analyses, are to be considered as preliminary, since this aspect of the research is still in progress.
