Dycal, Hydrex, and Pulpdent appear to be very acceptable as base materials in deep cavities. It should be emphasized, however, that the biologic compatibility of these materials as shown in the present study may not necessarily be valid if the materials are used as pulp-capping agents. Any material has to be tested under conditions which accurately reflect its clinical use, and previous studies have shown differences in the biologic effects of these materials when used as pulp-capping agents.
