• Water indices are still the most practical approach for the calculation of primary thematic maps for the identification of water bodies, while thresholding methods are still the most practical approach for the determination of decision boundaries. • Modified NDWI (MNDWI) can produce very good results compared to different indices. • Although there are many thresholding methods, it can be said that Prewitt and Mendelsohn's Minimum thresholding method generally achieves the highest accuracy.
