A Review on Research and Application of Expert Systems on Drug Formulation and Process Design

Expert system (ES) is one of the important branches of artificial intelligence and has achieved rich research results in various fields such as medicine. With the innovative development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the integration of TCM with artificial intelligence has become a prominent area of investigation. This chapter briefly summarizes the general composition and classification of ES, as well as the construction ideas and contents of each part of ES to elucidate its fundamental operational principles. Additionally, it presents recent research cases on ES in the pharmaceutical domain both domestically and internationally, analyzing TCM preparations as a specific case study. Furthermore, this chapter meticulously highlights the latest accomplishments in utilizing ES for research and development in TCM, aiming to inspire and serve as a reference for future endeavors in developing novel pharmaceutical ES while offering fresh perspectives for further advancements in TCM.
