摘要
This chapter talks about the ways that people evaluate, or appraise, built environments around them. It describes insights and knowledge from environmental psychology for informing the design of built environments that enhance human welfare. The chapter discusses uniformities in the appraisal of built settings based on the physical qualities of those settings. It then discusses variations in appraisals associated with differences in one's personal characteristics. Architects and non-architects differ in their appraisals because they have a different sense of architectural meaning. Attempts to design buildings that promote human well-being and behaviour have been undertaken for many years. The chapter reviews three modern approaches: social design, biophilic design, and evidence-based design. It shows that when empirical research successfully combines with architectural expertise, built spaces will mirror occupants' behavioural tendencies and enhance their daily experience.
