Abstract Evolutionary algorithms are a powerful tool to solve optimization problems. The method is robust and can solve problems for a wide range of applications. It is especially useful to tackle those problems that are impossible or hard to solve using other techniques. There is no guarantee that the optimal solution is actually found but in most cases, a sufficiently good solution is determined within a short period of time. Evolutionary algorithms try to mimic the biological principles of reproduction and selection. This chapter gives an overview of the various methods and concludes with selected examples of successful applications of evolutionary methods to solve textile-related problems.
