Platinum(IV) diphosphate (PtP2O7) is monoclinic with a0 = 7.095(2) Å, b0 = 7.883(2) Å, c0 = 9.302(3) Å, β = 111.37(3)° and Z = 4; it crystallizes in space group P21/n. The crystal structure was determined using photographically recorded intensities of 646 independent reflections and was refined to R = 0.101. Two [PO4] tetrahedra are linked to an almost eclipsed diphosphate group [P2O7] with a P-O-P angle of 132.4(12)°. Two crystallographically non-equivalent platinum atoms form slightly distorted centrosymmetric [PtO6] octahedra with mean Pt-O distances of 1.98(2) and 2.01(2) Å.
