These new components are coupled with the ocean model (ROMS) along the land-ocean boundary, where water level and sediment information are exchanged dynamically. The Model Coupling Toolkit was applied at the hydrological and ocean model boundary to ensure the seamless exchange of water level, momentum, and sediment. We applied the system to simulate the water and sediment dynamics during the compound flooding incurred by Hurricane Florence in 2018 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. A series of diagnostic experiments were carried out to assess the contribution of atmospheric, ocean, and river in sediment yield and dispersal from the watershed to the coastal ocean and the compound effects of these processes. The accuracy of the model in reproducing the impacts of the hurricanes is promising for management of the Land-Estuary-Ocean (LEO) continuum.
