AbstractThis chapter describes basics of modulators based on EO effect, by using time domain mathematical expressions. In materials with electro-optic (EO) effect, the refractive index can be controlled by voltage applied to a modulator, so that optical phase can be controlled by the voltage. This is a basic principle of an optical phase modulator by EO effect. Various types of modulators can be constructed by using combinations of phase modulators.
