Modeling light shifts in optical lattice clocks

A model for the unavoidable lattice-induced light shifts of the clock frequency in optical lattice clocks is presented that is applicable to a wide range of operating conditions. Application of the model to existing ytterbium clocks brings the corresponding frequency uncertainties down into the 10${}^{\ensuremath{-}18}$ regime.
