As a type of teaching theory, teaching language as communication came into being in the early1970s and its relative reseach and practice reached the summit in the middle 1980s. This essay presents thedefinition of teaching language as communication, the necessity and feasibility of its practice in the first place.Then the author introduces the three prominent aspects when teaching college English. Also the author advocatesthat during the whole English classroom activities, English teachers should make an effort to cultivate students'communicative competence. At the end of the article, it is pointed out that college English teachers ought topursue advanced study of their professional knowledge, improve their teaching methods to perfect the learnerscommunicative competence.
