In Brief After the induction of paraplegia in rabbits using a spinal cord injury event, electrical stimulation of the sacral 3 (S3) nerve root was found to improve intestinal tract motion and defecation. Bacterial translocation from the gut and endotoxemia were also reduced, which decreased the incidence of systemic infl ammatory response syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.
