Attenuated Total Reflection – Infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy is a powerful characterizing technique for capturing vibrational features of functional groups with direct and molecular level information provided. This article briefly overviews the applications of ATR-IR spectroscopy in studying nanomaterials in the research field of electrocatalysis. The basic concepts, instrument setups, and representative examples of its applications are included. Identification of key reaction intermediates, impacts of catalyst structure/composition on the catalytic performance, and contributions of electrolytes are discussed.
