摘要
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) belong to a class of smart materials with the ability to memorize or retain their previous shape when subjected to external stimuli such as thermomechanical or magnetic gradients. SMAs have attracted significant attention and interest in in a broad range of commercial applications owing to their unique and superior properties, which have been well-analyzed and characterized by applied research studies. The key benefit of SMA actuators lies mainly in the possibility of simple and compact mechanical designs requiring low actuating force levels. This chapter provides a timely review of SMA research and commercial applications with special relevance to the automotive technology field. Advances and application opportunities are discussed that make them ideally suited for industrial challenges.
