The most active membrane transport system in eukaryotic cells — the ADP,ATP counter-exchange unique to mitochondria — is characterized by its transport activity, its coupling to energy transfer and its molecular properties. The study of this system has advanced our knowledge of the mechanism of a membrane carrier, and has generated the 'gated pore' model.
