Difficulty of early diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Japanese case studies

An early diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis can be difficult to establish in patients with atypical features such as unilateral crural amyotrophy or showing motor symptoms and signs of overlapping conditions like cervical spondylosis, unless these patients are followed over long periods of time. Here we describe three such cases from our hospital in Japan.
