摘要
PMS has been reported as generator of discomfort and distress for millions of women. Although physical activity has been frequently recommended to help manage PMS symptoms, there is still little scientific evidence of its helpful effects. PURPOSE: This survey examined the effects of regular physical activity on cycling women who have reported PMS symptoms. METHODS: 151 exercising women who practice at least one type of physical activity at several health clubs and gyms in the city of Rio de Janeiro and 169 non-exercising women (faculty, staff and students of Universidade Gama Filho) participated in the study. All participants completed a questionnaire (previously validated by 3 international and 4 national referees), which assessed their symptoms and their physical activity profile. RESULTS: The two studied samples did not show significant differences either in terms of symptoms (88/%/both samples) or in terms of incidence in relation to age as demonstrated by the test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov (age distribution in both samples). The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed that regular physical activity contributed for (1) the diminishing of the intensity of headaches in the sample of exercisers (p = 0.025) and (2) the decrease of palpitations and moodiness (p = 0.022 and p = 0.038, respectively). Physical activity did not show any significant effect on other symptoms. CONCLUSION: The contributions of regular physical activity to the relief of PMS symptoms did nto seem to be as effective as it has been advocated by the clinical practice.
