Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) or stress-induced cardiomyopathy has gained increased attention, especially over the last two decades. The observation of an association between myocardial impairment and systemic catecholamine excess was recognized as early as the mid-twentieth century. [1] A physical or emotional trigger with resultant supraphysiologic neurohormonal activation has detrimental effects on myocardial cells. The pathophysiological basis for this association was poorly understood back then.
