Biological membranes are formed by lipid bilayers that act as functional barriers between the subcellular compartments and their environment. Lipids are one of the essential components of all cells and serve a wide range of functions. Lipids are key functional regulators of membranes that encapsulate different subcellular structures, such as the plasma membrane, endosomes, nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum, lipid droplets, Golgi apparatus, and mitochondria. These membrane structures are composed of different lipids. This chapter describes lipid compositions and the characterization of their functions in cells, which play an important role in cell biology.
