Zeolite coatings on aluminum alloys and other metals are a safe alternative to the commonly used, toxic chromate conversion coating. However, zeolite coatings are usually synthesized in aqueous medium under high pressure. Using an ionothermal method, an oriented SAPO-11 coating on an Al alloy was prepared at ambient pressure using microwave radiation. This coating shows exceptional corrosion resistance.
