We find ourselves on the threshold of a cancer screening revolution—one that could extend the lives of millions of people by screening for multiple cancer types using a combination of single-cancer blood tests and tests capable of identifying multiple cancers . Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests use various technologies, including genetic, epigenetic , and protein detection methods, to identify circulating biomarkers associated with cancer onset. As MCED reaches the clinic, health care providers must understand how these tests work, what information they provide, how to interpret and act on results, and how to communicate those results to patients.
