The jellyfishes as ornamental organisms have a wide margin of progression, and they are considered an emerging group in the ornamental industry. In the present study, we hypothesize that diet can influence the survival and growth of ephyra to juvenile jellyfish of the species Phyllorhiza punctata, in captivity. Six diets were tested: (A) Artemia naupli (10 Ind/ml), (B) rotifers (20 Ind/ml), (C) mix of Artemia (5 Ind/ml) and rotifers (10 Ind/ml), (D) microalgae (Nannochloropsis sp., 5*105cells/ml), (E) mix of Artemia (10 Ind /ml) and microalgae(Nannochloropsis sp., 5*105cells/ml) and (F) mix of rotifers (20 Ind /ml) and microalgae(Nannochloropsis sp., 5*105cells/ml). The ephyra were obtained by strobilation of a population of polyps maintained in captivity at our facilities. 450 ephyra were collected and were randomly distributed into eighteen cilyndroconic tanks at stocking density of 24 ephyra.L-1 (3 replicates for treatment), maintained in a controlled room temperature (22ºC±1ºC). Ephyra were fed every two days during the 24 days of the experiment. Every two days the survival was monitored and nine ephyra of each treatment were collected in order to measure its diameter. After 24 days the survival varied from 27.8±11.1% to 93.1±1.4% on treatments A and F, respectively. The ephyra feed with Artemia naupli (diet A) showed the poorest survival compared with others diets (p-value<0.05). Moreover the growth were significantly affected by the diet (p-value<0.05) and varied between 1.59±1.14 mm on diet A to 6.93±0.38 mm on diet F. The present results showed the importance of choosing the first food for rearing ephyra of P. puntacta. In general, the survival and growth were best when ephyra were feed with diet of rotifers and microalgae.
