Aberrant brain dynamics (i.e., altered recruitment or traversal through different brain states over time) putatively characterized bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). Previous research typically assigned one dominant brain state to each time point. However, as multiple brain states might be engaged at any given moment, this approach might obscure changes in less prominent but critical brain states. Here, we introduced a novel framework to simultaneously assess the engagement of multiple brain states in BD and SCZ.
