摘要
The following paper addresses several commonly held misconceptions regarding the work of sociologist George Homans, the father of social exchange theory (SET). First, we compare and contrast Homans’ academic pedigree and output to that of his influences and peer group to illustrate that he took a unique approach to the prevailing questions of his day. Next, we posit that Homans’ fresh perspective during a period in which the field of sociology was undergoing immense changes provided legitimacy to his work. Finally, we contend that Homans’ social exchange theory leaves room for altruism before exploring Homans’ representation in the annals of management history.
