IC is a sensitive and powerful analytical method for determining inorganic anions and cations, as well as selected organic substances which can existing in the ionic form. In many cases, it has replaced the conventional wet chemical methods, which often are labor-intensive and time-consuming. The most important advantages of ion chromatography are: a broad range of applications; well developed hardware; many detection options; reliability; very good accuracy and precision; high selectivity, speed, and separation efficiency; and low cost of consumables. Recently, the most important challenges related to ion chromatography development are: new sample preparation methods (especially for complex matrices samples); improving the speed and selectivity of analytes separation; lowering of limits of detection and limits of quantification; extending the range of applications and miniaturization. Easy sample preparation, avoidance of hazardous chemicals, decreased sample volumes, flexible reaction options on changing sample matrix to be analyzed or the option to operate a fully automated system are some of the reasons for the broad acceptance of the IC since its implementation in routine and research laboratories.
