That was my question to ChatGPT and I was happy to read the answer: “Yes, perianesthesia nurses play a crucial role in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) and are an essential part of the healthcare team. Their presence is essential for the provision of high-quality care and optimal patient outcomes in the postanesthesia period.” I kept asking questions and asked about what kind of education a nurse needs to work in the PACU. The answer included information about different nursing degrees, certifications, clinical training, and experience. The information concluded with the following statement: “Continuing education and professional development are also essential for nurses working in the PACU to stay updated on best practices, emerging technologies, and advancements in perianesthesia care.” Now ChatGPT had me in her grasp and I kept asking: Why is it hard for the nurses to receive continuing education? ChatGPT answered me that nurses may face various challenges in receiving continuing education due to a combination of factors and that there are reasons for this such as that nurses often work long hours and irregular shifts, short-staffing and heavy workloads, limited access to education programs, and lack of employer support. Nervously, I asked if ChatGPT can replace continuing education? I was reassured when I read the answer “While ChatGPT can provide information and guidance, it is important for nurses to engage in formal continuing education programs, workshops, conferences, and other recognized educational activities to gain the full benefits of professional development and ongoing learning. ChatGPT can be a supplementary resource to support nurses in their quest for knowledge, but it should not be relied upon as a replacement for receiving continuing education from established and reputable sources.”
