Genealogical literature is the body of writings on genealogy, which is the study of ancestry and descent. This entry consists of a description of the history of genealogy, the users of genealogical literature, and the procedures and resources used in genealogical research. The steps in genealogical research consist broadly of a preliminary survey to identify what is already known about one’s ancestors, using compiled sources, and then verifying and extending what is known, using original sources. A discussion of both compiled and original sources, along with reference tools and periodical and news sources is included. Tables are presented outlining the major resources available in each of these areas, including resources for specific countries. Both print and online resources are identified
