Hydrogels have attracted much attention due to their high water retention, biocompatibility and degradability. In the field of agriculture, the use of hydrogels as pesticide carriers not only effectively reduces the amount of pesticides used but also prolongs the duration of their effective action on crops. Furthermore, by choosing types of polymers in hydrogels and adjusting designs of hydrogel structure and chemical characteristics in a rational manner, targeted functionalities and properties can be endowed in the field of agriculture. In this paper, the types and preparation methods of the hydrogel for encapsulating pesticides are introduced first, and the methods of encapsulating pesticides in the hydrogel are classified. After that, we discussed various mechanisms of hydrogel release loads and relevant release kinetic. Finally, correlative properties for pesticide encapsulation and the effects of hydrogel on different sites are also involved. We hope it can provide reference for researchers in related fields.
