The maize basal endosperm transfer layer (BETL), with its unique location at the juncture of maternal and filial tissues, plays a critical role in grain-filling and defense. Symplastic discontinuity between the mother plant and BETL is elaborated through programmed cell death in the placenta-chalaza region. This chapter provides insights into the structure, function, and signalling roles of the BETL. This will foster future research into the development and function of this important seed tissue. Future directions are mentioned.
