Two-dimensional layered metal dichalcogenides (LMD) have been a topical subject in the recent era, owing to their potential in energy harvesting and storage. The synergy and intercalation effect of layered dichalcogenides nanomaterials has enhanced electrochemical properties, resulting in advances in solar cell energy harvesting applications. The intercalation process on the host dichalcogenides results in tuning its electronic, optical, and transport properties, leading to improved optical and electronic responses. The current review focuses on the synthesis, fabrication, and characterization techniques for some prominent layered metal dichalcogenides. The review emphasizes recent progress in the ongoing research activities of layered dichalcogenides for solar cell applications to provide insight for future research. Here, the synergy and intercalation effect on the properties of LMD is discussed with a focus on synthesis and fabrication methods. Furthermore, the properties and applications of these materials, with focus on solar cell energy harvesting and storage, are addressed. In conclusion, the outlook, challenges, and prospects of LMDs are discussed.
