Thermal Insulation: A Thermally Insulating Textile Inspired by Polar Bear Hair (Adv. Mater. 14/2018)

In article number 1706807, inspired by polar bear hair, Hao Bai and co-workers fabricate a textile with excellent thermal insulation properties by a “freeze-spinning” technique in which silk fibroin solution is continuously spun into aligned porous fibers. In addition to passively insulating heat loss, the textile can also function as a wearable heater, when doped with electroheating materials such as carbon nanotubes, to induce fast thermal response and uniform electroheating.
