Composite insulators are widely used in power transmission lines. With the increase of the operating life of the composite insulator, the composite insulator will age, and the micro-crack of the shed is a typical one. This may seriously affect the operation of composite insulators and even transmission lines, so it is necessary to identify micro-cracks on the sheds of composite insulators. For the texture features of the micro-cracks on the shed of the composite insulator, the edge extraction method in image processing was used to extract the micro-cracks of the shed. This paper used different edge extraction operators, including Robert operator, Sobel operator, Canny operator and Laplace of Gaussian (LoG) operator to extract the texture features of the micro-crack on the shed. The texture images of micro-cracks extracted by different methods were compared and images were analyzed according to information entropy and sharpness. This is of great significance for studying the micro-crack of the shed of composite insulators.
