Sodium-doped Hydroxyapatite (HA) powders were successfully synthesized by a facile mechano-synthetic route. The effect of Na addition on the properties of HA was studied. XRD results confirmed that the major phase that is formed in all the doped powders is of apatite whereas a new phase of calcium sodium phosphate was formed at higher sodium (Na) concentrations. The crystallite size of the Na doped HA powders showed an increase from 27.7 nm (Pure HA) to 38.4 nm (NaHA4). FTIR results confirmed the presence of phosphate groups in the synthesized powders which became prominent at higher Na concentrations. Zeta potential studies revealed a negative potential for all the powders. FESEM micrographs ddepicted a change in the particle shape from spherical to oblong at higher Na concentrations.
