Although hematoporphyrin derivative fluorescence was not confined to malignant tissues with the dose used there was preferential localization in malignant and pre-malignant epithelium. Also high intensity illumination of an area of hematoporphyrin derivative sensitized carcinoma caused tumor destruction. Therefore, it is suggested that hematoporphyrin derivative could be used as an aid to the diagnosis and treatment of carcinoma of the bladder. © 1976 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited BySelman S (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 178, NO. 5, (1979-1979), Online publication date: 1-Nov-2007.Pinthus J, Bogaards A, Weersink R, Wilson B and Trachtenberg J (2018) Photodynamic Therapy for Urological Malignancies: Past to Current ApproachesJournal of Urology, VOL. 175, NO. 4, (1201-1207), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2006.EL KHATIB S, DIDELON J, LEROUX A, BEZDETNAYA L, NOTTER D and D'HALLEWIN M (2018) KINETICS, BIODISTRIBUTION AND THERAPEUTIC EFFICACY OF HEXYLESTER 5-AMINOLEVULINATE INDUCED PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY IN AN ORTHOTOPIC RAT BLADDER TUMOR MODELJournal of Urology, VOL. 172, NO. 5, (2013-2017), Online publication date: 1-Nov-2004.XIAO Z, BROWN K, TULIP J and MOORE R (2018) Whole Bladder Photodynamic Therapy for Orthotopic Superficial Bladder Cancer in Rats: A Study of Intravenous and Intravesical Administration of PhotosensitizersJournal of Urology, VOL. 169, NO. 1, (352-356), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2003.Chang S, MacRobert A and Bown S (2018) Photodynamic Therapy on Rat Urinary Bladder with Intravesical Instillation of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid: Light Diffusion and Histological ChangesJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 5, (1749-1753), Online publication date: 1-May-1996.Kriegmair M, Waidelich R, Lumper W, Ehsan A, Baumgartner R and Hofstetter A (2018) Integral Photodynamic Treatment of Refractory Superficial Bladder CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 4, (1339-1341), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1995.Leveckis J, Burn J, Brown N and Reed M (2018) Kinetics of Endogenous Protoporphyrin IX Induction by Aminolevulinic Acid: Preliminary Studies in the BladderJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 2 Part 1, (550-553), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1994.Pope A and Bown S (2018) The Morphological and Functional Changes in Rat Bladder Following Photodynamic Therapy with Phthalocyanine PhotosensitizationJournal of Urology, VOL. 145, NO. 5, (1064-1070), Online publication date: 1-May-1991.Reed M, Schuschke D, Ackermann D, Harty J, Wieman T and Miller F (2018) The Response of the Rat Urinary Bladder Microcirculation to Photodynamic TherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 3, (865-868), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1989.Harty J, Amin M, Wieman T, Tseng M, Ackerman D and Broghamer W (2018) Complications of Whole Bladder Dihematoporphyrin Ether Photodynamic TherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 6, (1341-1346), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1989.Manyak M, Matthews D, Smith P, Nochomovitz L, Glatstein E and Russo A (2018) Response of Normal Canine Ureter to Photodynamic Therapy Using a Cylindrical FiberJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 1, (199-203), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1988.Baghdassarian R, Wright M, Vaughn S, Berns M, Martin D and Wile A (2018) The Use of Lipid Emulsion as an Intravesical Medium to Disperse Light in the Potential Treatment of Bladder TumorsJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 1, (126-130), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1985.Nseyo U, Dougherty T, Boyle D, Potter W, Englander L, Huben R and Pontes J (2018) Experimental Photodynamic Treatment of Canine BladderJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 2, (311-315), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1985.Selman S, Milligan A, Kreimer-Birnbaum M, Keck R, Goldblatt P and Britton S (2018) Hematoporphyrin Derivative Photochemotherapy of Experimental Bladder TumorsJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 2, (330-333), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1985.Tsuchiya A, Obara N, Miwa M, Ohi T, Kato H and Hayata Y (2018) Hematoporphyrin Derivative and Laser Photoradiation in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Bladder CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 1, (79-82), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1983.Dougherty T (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 1, (82-82), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1983.Hisazumi H, Misaki T and Miyoshi N (2018) Photoradiation Therapy of Bladder TumorsJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 4, (685-687), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1983.Whitmore W (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 4, (687-687), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1983.Benson R, Kinsey J, Cortese D, Farrow G and Utz D (2018) Treatment of Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder with Hematoporphyrin Derivative PhototherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 6, (1090-1094), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1983.Soloway M (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 6, (1094-1095), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1983.
