Sustainable Paper‐Based Packaging

Paper-based packaging is seen as one of the alternatives to plastic as it is made from renewable and sustainable material and, most importantly, it is biodegradable. The pulp and paper industry is the downstream industry or the end user of the forest sector. Production of paper uses mostly fibrous raw material that can be further classified into primary or secondary fiber. The principle of papermaking involves three stages, namely preparation of fiber suspension in water, formation of papersheet through the fiber network, and lastly removal of water by drainage, pressure, and drying. Paper-based packaging can be divided into two major components, namely box-type and paper sheet-type. Packaging is one of the important processes in food and beverages industries, as also is transportation, which should be capable of preventing deterioration of the food and beverages, or goods, from environmental influences during storage and transportation.
