Carbon dioxide radical anion (CO2•–) is a highly reactive nucleophilic radical species that has recently emerged in organic chemistry as a strong single electron donor (reductant) and as a reactant for the synthesis of carboxylic acids. In general, CO2•– can be generated by either direct reduction of CO2 or HAT of formate salts. Achievements in reactions involving CO2•– have been witnessed in recent years. This Review summarizes the recent advances in reactions involving CO2•– by highlighting some challenges and identifying potential areas of improvement, which may offer inspiration for future studies.
