Laminar flow and diffusion are two important characteristic features of fluid flow in a microchannel. In this chapter, we will carry out an experiment to observe and characterize laminar flow and diffusion in a microfluidic device. First, theoretical background for laminar flow and diffusion are provided. The following sections cover topics related to the design of the microfluidic device used in the experiment, the chemicals and materials required, and the hazard associated with this experiment. The experimental section includes a step-by-step procedure for the fabrication of Jell-O chip and laminar flow setup and monitoring using a smartphone. Additional notes that may help instructors and students are also highlighted. Assessment questions are included to help determine students’ knowledge of the experiment. References at the end of the chapter may be helpful for further reading.
