摘要
As the science of sol-gel materials develops with new understanding of synthesis and processing, structure development, and structure-property relationships, opportunities are presented for research into new emerging areas. Examples are composite waveguides for third-order nonlinear optical applications (all-optical)_and ion laser intracavity glass optics for ultraviolet photonics. The coupling of partial densification and pore structure development with laser physics will create new opportunities for optical device design. The implications for bioprocessing and biomimetics to enhance sol-gel processes are projected. The role of sol-gel processes and structures for creating multi-functional materials is assessed.
