The stress-dilatancy theories of Rowe (3) and Newland and Allely (7) both take account of the direction of particle movement and the consequent volume changes which occur when a granular mass is subjected to shear stresses. While that of Rowe has received considerable attention, [Barden and Khayatt (1), Horne (3,4), Lee (5), Rowe (10,11,12), Rowe, Barden and Lee (14), and others], Newland and Allely s theory has been relatively ignored
