Basic Research Advances on Bacterial T3SS-Effectors Mediated Blight Developments in Rice and Pomegranate

Bacterial blight remains a persistent threat to the cultivation of rice and pomegranate. The bacterial pathogen deploys type 3 secretion system (T3SS) effectors into the host cells that inhibit PTI, leading to the onset of effector-triggered susceptibility. Thereby, T3SS effectors help the bacteria grow and multiply within the respective host plants. This chapter provides an overview of the recent advances in understanding the role of different T3SS effectors of these two pathogens in disease development. Briefly, the functional analysis through employing effector-specific mutants and wild pathogens revealed the key effectors of the bacterial pathogens, and how the effectors modulate the plant defence for their own benefit was discussed.
