Microencapsulated ammonium(polyphosphate(MCAPP)) coated with a melamine-formaldehyde(MF) resin was prepared through in situ polymerization.The microencapsulation with MF resin leads to a reduction of the particles' water absorption.Ammonium polyphosphate(APP)-dipentaerythritol(DPE)-melamine(MEL) systems and MCAPP-DPE-MEL systems were chosen as intumescent flame retardants(IFR) to prepare water-based flame resistant coatings.The two comparative coatings were characterized by infrared spectroscopy(IR),thermogravimetry analysis(TGA),and so on.Results show that the latter has similar fire-retardation performances with the former but better water resistance than the former.Element analysis shows that the latter has a less loss of APP after water resistance test.
