Integrated Rail and Land Use Investment as a Multi-disciplinary Challenge

Abstract Investments in development in station areas are complex decisions because both transportation and urban development issues need to be dealt with. In this paper we present a conceptual framework that identifies four disciplinary approaches to the development of railway station areas. Combining these approaches creates both opportunities for synergy and threats of antagonisms. We apply and test this framework in one of the most successful station redevelopment projects in the Netherlands, and conclude that understanding of the opportunities for synergy should make the actors involved aware of each other's approaches and come to a common course of action.
