This chapter describes how acceptance has been measured and identifies various measurement categories. It illustrates the different outcomes of acceptance measurements depending on choice of assessment method and gives some guidance that could be used, depending on the purpose of the assessment. A thorough review of studies assessing acceptance was reported by Emeli Adell. The measurements used are most frequently derived from questionnaires, but there are measurements derived from interviews, focus groups, system use and driving performance. However, the measurements indicate, to some degree, the attitude towards the system and the usefulness of the system. In the field of developing new in-vehicle systems, major research projects undertaken previously have recognised the need for acceptance measurement as well as access to relevant acceptance measurement methods and tools. Measuring acceptance requires well-defined measurement methods and tools based on knowledge of what acceptance is as well as its delimitation in terms of the context or field of application of the acceptance measurement.
