Development of the Chinese College Students' Version of Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire

Objective:To develop a new version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire(BPAQ) applying to Chinese college students.Methods:By cluster sampling method,9 comprehensive universities in China were selected based on administrative division,and then 1722 College Students from these 9 universities were investigated by convenience sampling.Subsequently,the sample was divided into odd group(n=864) and even group(n=858) according to their number.The odd group was assessed by exploratory factor analysis(EFA) to ascertain the factor structure of questionnaire,while the even group was assessed by confirmative factor analysis(CFA) to test and verify the dimensions obtained before,respectively.The Chinese University-students Social Skill Inventory(ChUSSI) and Revised Cheek and Buss Shyness(RCBS) scale were used as criterions to test validity.Totally 165 students in one school were re-test 2 weeks later.Results:By means of EFA,4 factors(22 items),namely hostility,physical aggression,impulsivity and proneness,were extracted from BPAQ to develop a new model of the Chinese College Students' Version of Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire(CC-BPAQ).Confirmative factor analysis(CFA) was used to examine this new model(GFI=0.917,AGFI=0.896,CFI=0.899,RMSEA=0.059),which indicated a relatively high compatibility between the model and sample data.The scores of CC-BPAQ hostility,physical aggression,and anger proneness were negatively correlated with the ChUSSI scores(r=-0.23,-0.19,-0.20;Ps0.01),while positively correlated with the RCBS scrose(r=0.45,0.21,0.11,0.32;Ps0.01).The Cronbach' s alpha coefficient of the total scale was 0.89,and 4 subscales was 0.73-0.85.The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.91 for the total scale,0.75-0.80 for the 4 subscales.Conclusion:It suggests that the Chinese College Students Version of Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire is reliable and valid,and could be used as a tool for measuring college students' aggression.
