Type 1 diabetes: one size does not fit all

Type 1 diabetes affects people from different genetic and environmental backgrounds and its aetiology has long been debated. Although twin studies and epidemiological data provide important information on the familial risk for type 1 diabetes, identifying and understanding the possible triggers, risks, and clinical heterogeneity of the disease is also key. With the increasing incidence of diabetes pointing towards causes other than genetics, research such as the Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study is crucial.
