The importance of hydrogen as fuel for transport and power generation is continuously rising. To meet future demands, efficient and sustainable hydrogen production is required. This chapter introduces different technologies for hydrogen production, purification, and separation. The principles of steam reforming, partial and autothermal oxidation, and gasification as well as electrolysis are presented, and additional purification pathways, which are needed for the generation of ultrapure hydrogen for use in fuel cells, are described. Water-gas shift reactors and different sorption technologies, and chemical looping and membrane reactors are discussed. Additionally, chemical looping, which provides pure hydrogen from renewable sources with high efficiency and lower technical effort than conventional technologies, is discussed.
