摘要
Prosocial behaviors are inclusive of a wide range of specific forms of behaviors. Prosocial behaviors (i.e., actions that benefit others) are generally linked to individuals’ well-being and healthy adaptation, and they are fundamental events that foster more cooperative and harmonious societies. However, prosocial behaviors can be motivated by selfish motives, which can undermine their beneficial consequences. Therefore, research is needed to understand the correlates of distinctly motivated forms of prosocial behaviors. This chapter reviews theories and research on the development of prosocial motives across childhood to adulthood. Gaps in our understanding are identified and future directions for research are suggested.
