Moreover, A. baumannii forms biofilms and survives for several days in a dry environment contributing to its endemic infections in hospital installations. Therefore, the occurrence of extreme drug-resistant or MDR strains of A. baumannii due to biofilm formation and quorum sensing (QS) is posing a foremost challenge to the medical community. In this regard, an integrative approach including protein crystallography of therapeutic targets in A. baumannii, in vitro evaluation of bacterial adhesion for biofilm formation, in vivo QS activity, and structure-based drug design targeting the therapeutic proteins will provide the alternative options to combat A. baumannii infections. The chapter will provide a complete overview of all potential therapeutic protein targets in A. baumannii that aid in designing novel drugs or inhibitors.
