Three uretero-trigonal units were microdissected. The ureter is a non-layered muscular tube wherein the anatomical unit is muscle bundles that contain heterogeneously oriented muscle cells. Functional continuity of muscle cells is provided through the nexus, which are clearly defined structures. A group of morphologically distinct muscle cells are identified and these may represent the ureteral pacemaker cells. The functional status of muscle cells causes certain morphologic changes and, thus, the cells fixed in contraction differ from those fixed in relaxation and in vitro testing of muscle cell contractility is feasible. The ultrastructure of the normal urothelium and the adrenergic and cholinergic components of ureteral nerves are presented briefly. © 1976 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByIzol V, Acikalin A, Kuyucu Y, Deger M, Aridogan I, Polat S and Satar N (2018) Ultrastructural and Immunohistopathological Evaluation of Intravesical Ureters via Electron and Light Microscopy in Children with Vesicoureteral RefluxJournal of Urology, VOL. 191, NO. 4, (1110-1117), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2014.Park J, Ha S, Min G, Song C, Hong B, Hong J, Kim C and Ahn H (2018) The Protective Role of Renal Parenchyma as a Barrier to Local Tumor Spread of Upper Tract Transitional Cell Carcinoma and its Impact on Patient SurvivalJournal of Urology, VOL. 182, NO. 3, (894-899), Online publication date: 1-Sep-2009.Floyd R, Borisova L, Bakran A, Hart C, Wray S and Burdyga T (2018) Morphology, Calcium Signaling and Mechanical Activity in Human UreterJournal of Urology, VOL. 180, NO. 1, (398-405), Online publication date: 1-Jul-2008.OSMAN Y, SHOKEIR A, GABR M, EL-TABEY N, MOHSEN T and EL-BAZ M (2018) CANINE URETERAL REPLACEMENT WITH LONG ACELLULAR MATRIX TUBE: IS IT CLINICALLY APPLICABLE?Journal of Urology, VOL. 172, NO. 3, (1151-1154), Online publication date: 1-Sep-2004.RICHTER F, STOCK J and HANNA M (2018) THE APPENDIX AS RIGHT URETERAL SUBSTITUTE IN CHILDRENJournal of Urology, VOL. 163, NO. 6, (1908-1912), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2000.Goldfischer E and Gerber G (2018) Endoscopic Management of Ureteral StricturesJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 3, (770-775), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1997.Gearhart J, Lee B, Partin A, Epstein J, Gosling J and Kogan B (2018) A Quantitative Histological Evaluation of the Dilated Ureter of Childhood.
