Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy and Endoscopic Resection for Hypopharyngeal Cancer

A 79-year-old man was diagnosed with a cT2 hypopharyngeal cancer and cT2 esophageal cancer by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Computed tomography showed swelling of the thoracic paratracheal lymph nodes (cN1 for esophageal cancer). He first underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy for esophageal cancer (2 courses of cisplatin 80 mg/m2/d on Day 1 and fluorouracil 800 mg/m2/d on Days 1–5) followed by esophagectomy with lymphadenectomy and reconstruction of the gastric tube. Before chemotherapy, the hypopharyngeal cancer extended from the aryepiglottic fold to the posterior cricoid region and right piriform sinus (Figure A).
